I tried to organize it again a few months later on April 27, at the Little Current Legion. About a dozen ladies and four guys came out. I just wanted to make some girlfriends. Julie said she was apprehensive about their age difference at first, as Nelson was 32 at the time and she was Julie had just moved to Manitoulin from southern Ontario to work as a dietitian for Noojmowin Teg. She grew up in Timmins, but had lived in London since she was years-old. Meanwhile, Nelson was a Haweater, born and raised on Manitoulin.
The son of Dale and Kathy Wood of Sheguiandah, Nelson attended Manitoulin Secondary School before going away for school and eventually becoming a teacher. He returned to settle on Manitoulin, teaching in Wikwemikong since Something clicked and I knew she was the one. The Ojibway believe that Manitoulin Island was the home of Gitchi Manitou or the Great Spirit who inhabited its misty coves and tree-covered bluffs. Seventeenth century visitors included Champlain, Joliet, Marquette and LaSalle and the island soon formed part of the voyageur trade route to the west. The great Spirit would scarcely recognize his home today. The present landscape is a collage of mixed forest, fields separated by meandering split-rail fences, small communities, and cottages dotting the shoreline.
Numerous paleontolotical and stratigraphic studies generated a wealth of information on the rocks of the island and these aided significantly in understanding the geological setting of southern Ontario and correlative rocks in northern Michigan. This field trip will take participants through selected outcrops of the early Proterozoic Huronian Supergroup and Ordovician-Silurian outcrops on and just north of Manitoulin Island. The nearly undisturbed, gently south-southwestward dipping Paleozoic sedimentary deposits of this area lap onto the Huronian strata of the Precambrian Shield Fig.
The contact is exposed and accessible in several places. Except for a basal red-bed unit which is of uncertain age, the Paleozoic sediments begin with the Middle Ordovician and close with the Middle Silurian.

The remains found in Sheguiandah represent a series of successive cultural occupations of early inhabitants in what is now Ontario, beginning with the Paleoindian Period circa 11, B. The site also contains artifacts from the Archaic period B. The main features of the site are the local outcrops of quartzite, from which early Aboriginal peoples could make tools and weapons.
Large stone hammers were used to strike off pieces of the bedrock, and from the finer fragments the settlers chipped out great numbers of knives, scrapers, and other tools for use in hunting, fishing, and food-gathering. Key elements that contribute to the heritage character of the site include: – its location north of present-day Sheguiandah, in Ontario; – its setting on the north-western shore of Manitoulin Island in Lake Huron; – the natural features of the site, including the quartzite knoll with its quarries and swamps, and the slope and the base of the knoll which are occupied by the modern village of Sheguiandah.
